What is Shena?

​Shena means swimming in Persian. Envisage fluid, wave like, circular motions.

The Shena is an ancient tool used for the most ancient of all exercises, the push-up.

The push-up, the greatest of all exercises, confers not only physical benefits but also the profoundly empowering feeling to be able to push oneself off the ground and stand tall as a man.

The Shena is used as a symmetrical stable platform to do push-ups on while enabling greater leverage and range of motion during body-weight strength movements. It enables a much greater variety of movements during push-up exercises and is easier on the wrists.

Benefits of the Shena

The Shena encourages external rotation of the arm at the shoulder joint reducing the stress on the glenohumeral joint structures like bursae, ligaments and tendons when doing push-ups i.e. it enforces correct posture and technique

The Shena enables a deeper and fuller Range of Motion. In a standard ‘Western’ push-up the hand position is often perpendicular to the floor and directly under the shoulders, especially during the eccentric phase of the push-up, whereas in certain Persian push-ups the hands travel all the way below the 12th rib during the eccentric push-up phase.

The Shena shifts the centre of mass superiorly enabling leveraging of the body weight making the push-ups more challenging

The Shena provides a stable, balanced and symmetrical platform to do push-ups on…in many Persian push-ups we perform dynamic postures while doing push-ups and at times one or both hands are lifted off the Shena to later return to the Shena for more push-ups, making it relevant to land symmetrically on a stable platform.

The Shena is also better for wrist health as it helps to keep the wrist in more natural angle rather than perpendicularly to the floor.

The Shena improves mobility, flexibility and ROM to the wrists, shoulders and hips and enables you to perform push-ups on any surface.
